Vital energy point massage

What is Marma Massage?

Marma massage is a distinct ayurvedic therapy that focuses on the vital energy points (marma) of the body. It works by stimulating the flow of vital energy (prana) through the energy channels of the body.

Ayurveda highlights107 such vital energy points. By using special massage and acupressure techniques systematically applied to these 107 points, marma massage therapy clears energy blockages, balances and improves energy flow, heals injuries, diseases and imbalances, harmonises all body systems, and restores health and well-being.

This revitalising experience is suitable for anyone. It is a great preventative therapy as well as a healing treatment, and is recommended as part of a regular fortnightly or monthly self-care routine.

What is Marma?

Knowledge of marma and the energy body (chakras and nadis) form an integral part of Ayurveda and its treatment modalities.

Marma is a Sanskrit word meaning “seat of vital energy (Prana or Vayu) and denotes the vital energy points in the body.

Marma are often located at junction points in the body where two or more tissue types, such as muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, ligaments or bones, meet.

Indications:

Marma massage therapy is also helpful if you suffer from any of the following conditions:

The Process on the Spot

At Sunshine Ayurveda, marma massage therapy is performed by an Ayurveda doctor or one of our experienced therapists.

The treatment involves an ayurvedic therapeutic oil massage (Abhyanga) all over your body using a warm herbal oil suited to your dosha constitution (Vata/Pitta/Kapha) and your health needs.

While massaging, our therapist will focus on energy points to stimulate blood flow and tone up the surrounding muscle at the neuro-muscular junctions. Using the palms, fingers, thumbs and heel, unique strokes and pressure are applied at different points.

The therapist may also use Kansa wands to stimulate certain marma during the session, and/or sound healing using a singing bowl. The vibrations of the singing bowl have a profound healing effect as each bowl is tuned to the frequency of a specific energy centre (chakra) in the body.

Your marma massage session will be followed by a herbal steam bath therapy (Swedana).

After treatment care

  • Leave some time after your treatment to rest
  • Leave the oil on for at least -3 hours before you shower
  • Eat a light meal after your treatment
  • Drink plenty of warm water or herbal tea
  • Try to avoid stimulants or stressful activities that may not support the desired effect of your treatment.

This treatment involves using oil; we recommend wearing clothes you don’t mind getting oil on until you can shower.
