Ayurvedic Therapeutic Colon Cleanse

What is Vasti Karma?

Vasti is one treatment among the five main Panchakarmas. Vasti therapy involves enema of herbal substances such as oils or herb decoctions, administered as a detoxification and rejuvenation therapy.

Vasti is one of the most important Panchakarma procedures and helps to control Vata Dosha. As Vata is the main cause of most disorders, Vasti is advised to prevent or treat a wide variety of diseases and restore health. It can be prescribed as an eliminative therapy to flush out toxins from the system or as a nourishing therapy to repair, heal and restore body tissues and systems to normalcy.

Panchakarma is the best way to detoxify and rejuvenate the body. It cleanses the body of toxins, boosts metabolism and prevents diseases from recurring.

Vasti is of two main types:

  1. Anuvasana/Sneha Vasti (oil enema): Used to nourish body tissues, pacify Vata Dosha and induce repair and healing within the body.
  2. Niruha/Asthapana Vasti (herbal decoctions): Used to detoxify and cleanse the minute channels of the body and flush out toxins from the system.

Vasti procedure is designed by the doctor according to the Dosha condition, diseases status and constitution of the patient. It may range from 8 to 30 days. After initial assessment and depending on the type of Vasti, a fixed time of day is selected and the patient will be asked to come on a full or empty stomach. The patient is asked to lie down on the massage table. Local Abhyanga (oil massage) may be given over the hips, lumbar region and lower abdomen, following this Swedana (sudation or heat therapy) is conducted. Then the patient adopts the left lateral position by folding the right leg, and the herbal enema is administered by the therapist. A follow up regime will be conducted and the time taken for the enema material to be evacuated is recorded. You will be advised on diet and follow-up medications accordingly.
